Preparing the boat
Want to come and row at Balmain? Great! We are always on the lookout for new members, whether or not you have rowed before. If you are new to the sport of rowing, then our “learn to row” program is for you. Run twice yearly, for 6-8 weeks at a time, people new to the sport of rowing are given the chance to try it out and learn the basics of rowing. If, at the end of the course, you want to continue your membership, we will integrate you into one of our regularly training squads. For more information on the learn to row course, see here.

Types of Membership

For rowers looking to join Balmain Rowing Club, we offer a range of membership options to suit your individual rowing experience, ability, and aspirations. There are three categories of membership: Active Racing, Active non-racing, and Past / Non-active membership.

Active Racing Membership

Active Racing membership is for competitive rowers of any level who want to join Balmain to row and race for the club.

A full racing membership includes all joining fees, regular membership subscriptions along with full use of the equipment at the shed, and all NSWRA seat fees incurred by racing for the club. The only fee we do not cover is your membership to the NSW Rowing Asociation. The club will subsidise a portion of this fee for junior members, which helps to keep the price low, however this is only for an under 21, full time student.

If you would like to coach for the club in addition to training and racing, we offer a highly competitive membership rate which again includes all seat fees from NSWRA, however to be eligible for this rate you must coach a regularly training squad at the club. We are always looking for coaches, however, so if you’re keen please get in contact and we’ll sort something out.

Temporary membership is charged on a monthly basis, and does NOT include any seat fees incurred by racing for the club. This form of membership is solely for those who are travelling and will thus not be available for the duration of a full membership.

Finally, coxswains are always welcome, and only a nominal yearly fee is charged.

Active Non-Racing Membership

Active Non-Racing membership is suitable for those rowers who would like to continue to row, but only recreationally. This form of membership includes all joining fees and full use of the boats, but does not cover seat fees with the NSWRA, as it is for those who do not intend to race.

Junior members again are subsidised by the club, and coaches need only pay a nominal price.

Past / Non-Active Membership

Past and Non-Active memberships are for those members who would like to keep in touch with the club, use the hall facilities, but who will rarely, or never row at the shed.

Past-Active members are eligible to row up to five times in a year to ‘keep in touch’, but otherwise are not allowed to use the rowing equipment or race, while Associate and Social members cannot row at all.

Social and associate members do not vote at meetings of the club.
For all tiers of membership, you need to submit a membership form along with a working with children form as the club has many junior members, both of which are available below. For active membership you also need to be nominated by a current member of the club to apply for membership. If you do not know anyone at the club you should accompany your membership with a brief introductory note explaining your rowing history, ability, and the reasons you have for joining the club.
