Gearing Up for Summer
10/08/07 16:07
The days are getting longer, the mornings are getting warmer, and already the New South Wales Rowing Association has begun its Summer Season. With this season being the longest season in memory, lasting 11 months from start to finish, rowers will need more than ever to prioritise their regattas and set short, medium and long term goals.
With the completion of the J B Sharp series (in which
Balmain enjoyed enormous success), the NSWRA calendar
moves into a new format for Summer, adopting a
ranking system largely the same as in Queensland and
Victoria. Rowers will be given a score of between 4
and 1.5, with 4 being an absolute novice and 1.5
being an elite rower. After each regatta, the scores
will be adjusted based on each rower's success. Crews
will be ranked using the average of the combined
rowers' scores, allowing crews to be made up of a
more diverse range of abilities, yet at the same time
creating more competitive races between crews.
Further, there are now a total of four different formats for club regattas themselves, with club, age/open, time trial and masters regattas respectively. The variety of formats will allow for shorter regattas, but has increased the frequency of regattas throughout the season, increasing the workload for organsations made up of a diverse range of rowers.
With BRC's past success during the summer season, winning the combined novice shield for the 2006-2007 season and coming a close third in the inaugural Super 8's competition, it will certainly be interesting to see how the club fares in the coming months!
